Introduction

  • Over the next three years People Dancing will invest £3.36million across the West Midlands in dance or dance related programmes/activity in the following areas: -
    • Dance at grass roots level (£1.67m up to 2012)
      • Supporting collaborative programmes from dance companies, leaders, sports clubs or community groups to develop dance at grass roots level
    • Dance leadership (£190,000)
      • Developing the capacity and skills of dance leaders in the region
    • Site-specific dance participation (£750,000)
      • Taking dance to places where dance is rarely seen – large-scale, mass participation
      • Flexible dance stage
      • A portable dance stage will be available for use by communities
    • Marketing and digital archive - ensuring that the public is better informed about dance opportunities

  • Last bidding date May 2009 – No bids submitted by Worcestershire, but 4 of the successful bids have region wide remits:
    • Blue-Eyed Soul, ‘Transformations’ project to create a new generation of leaders for disability and integrated dance, 3 year programme. Shropshire based but region wide.
    • Warwick Arts Centre, ‘Boys’ Dance’ – a programme of youth dance for boys in Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire, as well as in Worcestershire and Sandwell
    • Rosetta Life for ‘Moving into Being’ to equip dance leaders working in end of life care settings – training dance teachers, workshops, web resources leading to activity in hospices, care homes and in home for patients, their families and carers. Region wide, 3 years.
    • Street Games for ‘Streetcheer’, to roll out cheerleading training and resources for girls aged 14-16 across the region. 3 year programme.
  • Next bidding date: Nov 2009
  • Key Themes for Worcestershire bid (still in draft proposal stage):
    • Digital Dance - Mass engagement and awareness raising
    • Dance Squad - Specialist dance workers addressing targeted, strategic need at grassroots level
    • WDP - Working with professional dance companies
