When positive relationships exist between people of all ages and backgrounds in the area in which they live, communities are said to be 'cohesive'. Cohesion is about what people have in common, what brings people together and whether they get along with each other. Research has shown that everyone benefits when this is the case. These relationships empower communities to make them stronger, as by getting along together, people can work together to make improvements for thier own neighbourhoods and develop a sense of belonging, where people trust and tolerate each other. This is a cultural change and is strengthening society to help itself. This is very much in line with the Governments Big Society approach.

Using this toolkit:

The Worcestershire Partnership believes that all partner organisations have a part to play in supporting cohesive, strong communities and encouraging people to have a sense of belonging in their neighbourhoods. This should be embedded into what we all do every day, by adapting activities to benefit communities and to help bring people from different backgrounds together.

This toolkit has, therefore, been created to provide useful, practical support and examples, to help you to promote and include this work in your policies, services, local area and place of work. This toolkit supports the delivery of our Strategy for Cohesive, Strong Communities - "Getting Along Better Together".
