Groups go for gold with Games grants

More than £9,000 has been awarded to projects around Worcestershire inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and more money is available for groups to bid for.

The grants scheme can provide funding of up to £500 for any eligible project that aims to increase sport or physical activity and help to create an Olympic legacy in its local community.

  • In the Bromsgrove area, The Stroke Association and Haybridge High School have received grants.
  • In the Evesham and Pershore area, six organisations have received grants; Drakes Broughton Village Events Group, Abbots Morton and Harvington parish councils, Prince Henry's High School, Blackminster Middle School, Blossom Vale Children's Centre and a joint grant for Orchard Vale, Spring Vale and Apple Vale Children's Centres.
  • In the Malvern Hills area, Sunshine Children's Centre and Dyson Perrins CE Sports College have received grants.
  • In the Redditch area, Redditch Borough Council and Redditch YMCA have received grants.
  • In the Worcester area, Top Barn Activity Centre and Norton Community Group have received grants.
  • In the Wyre Forest area, five organisations have received awards for their projects; Wyre Forest School Sport Partnership, Stourport High School, St Bartholomew's CofE Primary School, Franche Community Primary School and Birchen Coppice Primary School.

The grants are being promoted by the Worcestershire Partnership, which published the "Inspired?" toolkit last year to help local organisations to create Olympic-themed activities. Any group following the advice in the "Inspired?" toolkit can apply for a small grant to support the project.

Peter Turvey, Olympics 2012 Coordinator for the Worcestershire Partnership, said: "We're keen to create a festival of Olympic and Paralympic activity in Worcestershire and in 2010-11 we had a great response to the toolkit and the small grant scheme with 19 separate projects receiving up to £500 each. As the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games get closer, moreRaising our game and more groups are responding to the public's appetite to get involved by setting up local Olympic-themed events and making the London2012 Games the ‘Games for Everybody’. Any voluntary or community association, statutory body or educational establishment in Worcestershire whose activities fit the criteria can apply for funding, and I encourage as many groups as possible to get in touch."

For guidance about applying, or to request an application form or a copy of the ‘Inspired?’ toolkit, project groups should contact Peter Turvey at pturvey@worcestershire.gov.uk
