Olympic Torch Relay Route
Worcestershire Features Heavily on the London 2012 Olympic Torch
Relay Route with thirteen communities in Worcestershire chosen
to play host to the Olympic Torch Relay.
The relay - in which 100% of the Worcestershire population will
be no more than 1 hour away from the Olympic Flame as it passes
through the region - will be an opportunity for communities to
welcome the flame, to welcome the torchbearers and extend an
invitation to surrounding communities to join in with the
celebrations (marking the countdown to the start of the Games).
Cllr Nathan Desmond, Worcestershire County Council's champion
for 2012 Olympics said: "We are very excited that the Olympic Torch
Relay will be travelling through the county, bringing the very
symbol of the Olympics, a symbol of peace and friendship to
the doorsteps of local residents, shining a light on our people and
places. We hope that people in Worcestershire will join in
the celebrations and welcome the Olympic Flame and share in the
Olympic spirit by supporting members of the community who have
been chosen to carry the Olympic Flame as its makes its way across
the county."
Bewdley, Kidderminster, Droitwich Spa, Fernhill Heath,
Worcester, Powick, Malvern, Malvern Wells, Redditch, Ashwood Bank,
Evesham, Wickhamford and Broadway are 13 of over 1,000 villages,
towns and cities announced by the London Organising Committee of
the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) through which the Olympic
Flame will be carried by Torchbearers during the London 2012
Olympic Torch Relay which is presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and
Samsung.
LOCOG has worked closely with representatives
from a number of sectors in Worcestershire to devise the route.
David Moorcroft, West Midlands for 2012 Chair said: “What fantastic
news for the residents of Worcestershire that they will have their
opportunity to welcome the Olympic Flame on 24th and
25th May and 1st July. We encourage
communities to start thinking now about how they will celebrate as
the Olympic Torch Relay, a once in a lifetime experience for many
of us, signals the approach of the London 2012 Olympic Games.”
People will be able to carry out a post code
search to see their closest Community at the Olympic
Torch Relay website.
