Listed Buildings at Risk
Indicator
Number of listed building graded I and II* which are at
risk.
Status

The number of listed buildings at risk within Worcestershire is
fair and improving.
Overview
English Heritage publishes an annual national register of
Buildings at Risk. This identifies listed buildings graded I and
II* which are at risk for a variety of reasons. The buildings are
graded in priority in relation to the necessity for action, e.g.
'rapid deterioration with no solution agreed to repair', 'a scheme
in progress but not yet implemented'.
The vast majority of all listed buildings are Grade II and
therefore not covered by English Heritage's list. Some District
Councils have therefore prepared and maintained their own local
Buildings at Risk registers for all grades of Listed Buildings.
Performance
As at May 2009, the number of grade I and II* listed buildings
identified as 'at risk' in Worcestershire was 15, down 1 from
previous figures. This represents a 6 percent reduction. Nationally
the reduction has been 3.2%.

Geographical Context
Of the 172 grade I and II* buildings at risk in the West
Midlands region, 8.7 percent are within Worcestershire, down from
9.3 percent in 2008.
Actions
More Local Authority staff time needs to be given to encouraging
owners to undertake and complete necessary repairs. Recent changes
in the national property market and economic climate will influence
the rate at which remaining buildings on the register are tackled.
It would be useful to assemble further statistics for risk levels
affecting grade II listed buildings and locally listed buildings to
provide an overall assessment of the health of historic buildings
in Worcestershire.
