Raising Our Game

How Worcestershire’s voluntary sector can realise the benefits from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

The 2012 Games offer a unique opportunity to strengthen the culture of volunteering in the region, not only in community sport but also to support a range of cultural and related events.  It is anticipated that up to 70,000 volunteers will be needed during the Games, in more than 3,500 different roles.

Information for potential volunteers

  • Recruitment for Games volunteers won't start until 2010
  • Registration is open now – this is not a commitment, it is simply a way to be kept informed of developments in the London 2012 Volunteer Programme via the regular supporters newsletter and volunteer-specific messages.
  • Recruitment and selection of volunteers for the 2012 Games will not be on a first come, first served basis. Instead, volunteers will be selected for a number of reasons including their individual skills and especially their volunteering experience.
  • To maximise the potential to be selected for a 2012 volunteer role it is a good idea for volunteers to support local activities.
  • A list of local 2012 (related) volunteering opportunities will appear on this page in due course

What’s Happening Nationally?

  • Volunteer Plan to be produced – first version by September 2007
  • Pre-Volunteering Programme (PVP) targeting disadvantaged people, including ethnic minorities and disabled people – learning from PVP to be shared with those who will run schemes in the future (2008)

What’s Happening in the West Midlands?

  • Development of an integrated regional and sub-regional volunteering infrastructure to steer, develop and deliver Games-related volunteering activity including recruitment, selection and training
  • A key focus is on gaining a strong representation from young volunteers (aged 14 – 25)

Potential Opportunities for Worcestershire

  • Linking into the opportunities created by the national and regional focus
  • Comprehensive training programme ensuring easy access to training
  • Focus on young people with the potential to create a new generation of young volunteers
  • Tap into Higher Education (and Further Education) with regards the potential for after school sport, community clubs
